Don’t Just Put It Down to “Getting Old”—Get It Checked Out

Getting to 60 plus means things can change dramatically, almost overnight. I’ve been looking at this as a life lesson for myself, picking up a few vital truths along the way. We tend to shrug off changes and mutter, “Oh, I’m just getting older,” but that’s the most dangerous trap you can fall into.

It’s all about shifting the balance as much in your favor as possible. Here are six things you cannot afford to ignore:

5. Heart Conditions (Watch for Atrial Fibrillation)

An irregular, racing heart, sudden fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or a drop in your walking and exercise tolerance are not just “senior moments.” Add in mild confusion, tiredness, slightly breathless moments, or changes in your eyesight, and you need to get checked out. Don’t guess—get an ECG.

4. Falls (And How to Stop Them)

A simple trip on an uneven pavement can lead to a fracture, a hospital stay, secondary complications, and a sudden loss of independence.

  • Move deliberately: If you need to get up from bed, do it slowly. Never hurry anywhere, anytime.
  • Build your armor: Balance and core strength prevent falls. Planks are fantastic for targeting your deep core.
  • Protect your bones: Osteoporosis can be fought with diet and heavy-lifting. Weight training builds strong legs because muscle is active, metabolic tissue that keeps you upright and safe.
  • Check your vision: Regular eye tests are non-negotiable.

3. Loss of Someone or Something

Losing someone close to you suddenly is a massive shock to the system. Statistically, the risk of physical and mental deterioration spikes quickly because your routine, diet, and lifestyle are flipped upside down. Socialization and physical anchoring are enormous parts of staying afloat through grief.

2. Practice Doing Hard Things Regularly

This is my absolute favorite prevention. It is never easy, but it’s about the grit it takes to overcome the challenge. Doing hard physical work—safely—gives you a better chance of bouncing back when life throws a punch.

  • Note: If you want basic resistance exercises and need someone to guide your technique so you don’t injure yourself, hire a personal trainer. Never wing it.

1. Malignancy (Spot the Red Flags)

Do not dismiss the small things straight to A&E because you ignored early red flags. Feeling sick for a few days, unusual pain, sudden weight loss, or blood loss from any area—get yourself checked by a professional. Dismissing these as “normal ageing” is a deadly misconception.

0. Medication Overload

Being on too many medications is one of the worst things you can do for your longevity. They interact, clash, and drag your energy right down into brain fog, and fatigue, and mild confusion. What was appropriate for your body 10 years ago might be toxic now. Consult your doctor to review and simplify your meds.

Stay strong, stay sharp, and never let age make the decisions for you.
